Our Commitment to our Beautiful Blue Planet

The Pelican Fish & Chip Restaurant and Takeaway is MSC certified which means that we have made a commitment to the future of this beautiful blue planet that we call home; to doing what we can towards protecting our oceans, the species that call them home and the livelihoods that they support.

We are one of a growing number of good fish and chip shops that are helping to Turn the Tide on Overfishing by choosing to buy wild-caught or farmed fish from sustainably and responsibly managed fisheries.

We are very proud to be MSC CERTIFIED (chain of custody code MSC-C-53721), which means that we wholeheartedly support and promote sustainability, traceability and the ‘chain of custody’. Every link from the fishers to our customers is audited and certified to ensure the traceability of the fish you choose to eat.

So if you have chosen to order a prime fillet of our MSC cod or a beautiful frozen-at-sea MSC line-caught haddock or one of our battered or hand-breaded MSC plaice fillets or any of our homemade dishes - with Royal Greenland MSC prawns or any MSC Catch of the Day then pat yourself on the back because you are making an important and informed choice to make a difference!

The future will thank you!

Survey carried out by Globescan January-February 2016

  • We buy our Cod from boats that fish in the Barents Sea – in the certified sustainable waters of the Arctic Ocean.
  • Our Haddock is fished in the North Atlantic Ocean where stocks are currently happily healthy and sustainable.
  • Our Plaice comes frozen at sea from sustainable Arctic waters.
  • Safely and sustainable our Royal Greenland cold-water Prawns are from in Disco Bay, Greenland.
  • Our Catch of the Day varies seasonally and due to availability. When we serve MSC hake we will let you know via our Specials boards. Often our catch will be a local, fresh fish delivered daily from a morning market by S & J Fisheries who support the Responsible Fishing Scheme.

“It’s great to see one of the top chippies in the country, like The Pelican, prioritising sustainability by becoming MSC certified. They understand that sustainability is fast becoming a top consideration for fish lovers. They’re offering a great service to their customers by providing a choice which has a really positive impact on the health of the oceans.”

George Clark, UK Commercial Manager at the MSC

Fish and Chip Quality Award

Not just a pretty face...

The Pelican has been awarded the Fish & Chip Quality Award which means that we are up in the top 2% of the estimated 10500 Fish & Chips shops in the UK!

To qualify we have had to satisfy an in-depth inspection by an approved assessor from the National Federation of Fish Friers. We were assessed on the overall appearance of the takeaway and the restaurant both inside and out, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training and records, practices and procedures of both front and back of house, equipment, staff knowledge and sales skills and, most importantly the quality of the final cooked product as it is experienced buy the customer.

The Pelican fish and chip customer testimonial

“Arrived at 5.30pm and it was very busy, probably best to book. Very clean everywhere, service was very friendly and extremely efficient and we spoke with 4 members of staff, each of them providing fabulous service. Food came out promptly looking delicious and excellent value for money. Highly recommend the seafood basket which tasted so good. Children get an activity sheet with new packaged crayons and their drinks come in little plastic cups with built in straw-brilliant idea! Kids menu was fab”
